The other day, I got a message from Red Light Revival, a Leeds-based bluesy rock-and roll band, saying they had some exciting news to share — they have a coveted spot as support for the Kyle Gass Band during their upcoming Thundering Herd Tour to the UK and Europe.
After shows in Glasgow and Manchester, the Kyle Gass Band will be playing on April 2 at The Brudenell Social Club in Leeds, with Red Light Revival as an opening act. Needless to say, Ben, the keyboard player, was bursting to tell me all about it.
I was excited to hear about it too, but I must confess before I go any further – I didn’t know who the Kyle Gass Band was. I can hear the gasping from here … I have since become a fan, so don’t hate me!
So, as a refresher on Red Light Revival, the band is composed of Matt on guitar and vocals; Jon on lead guitar; Phil on bass; Charlie on drums; and Ben on keys. I interviewed them last June, which you can read here: https://r8singer.wordpress.com/2016/06/13/red-light-revival-is-steeped-in-traditional-rock-and-blues-redlightrevival/.
Tickets for the Leeds show are available http://www.seetickets.com/event/the-kyle-gass-band/brudenell-social-club/1068450.
Here is what Ben had to say about the show with the Kyle Gass Band and other things Red Light Revival has cooking.
So, tell me …. What has RLR been up to lately?
Ben: Well, we’re having quite an interesting year, actually. We had decided that we were going to concentrate on writing material for the new album for second half of last year as Matt, our lead singer, was having to work away in London.
We ended up with a good collection of songs ready and then started to sort gigs out for this year. All was going really quite well and then I got a text from Jon at about 0.30 a.m. asking if I was able to take an urgent phone call from him.
He rang and explained that a UK promoter had been in touch to ask whether we were available to support the Kyle Gass Band at The Leeds Brudenell Social Club next month! All very exciting news!
Ok, being from the U.S., tell me who the Kyle Gass Band is …
Ben: Is now a bad time to mention that the Kyle Gass Band are American? You will be familiar with Tenacious D? The American band?
Oh, I best look them up … Yes, I know of Tenacious D …
Ben: Right — Tenacious D consists of Jack Black and Kyle Gass. Kyle Gass is currently touring with his band, well, that’s them who we are supporting.
That’s freaking awesome!
Ben: Yeah, we were quite pleased. It seems that your article listing us as one of the bands to watch for 2017 was prophetic.
I love it! I think you will fit in well with these boys. They are gritty rock and roll, not stuffy …
Ben: Yeah that’s what we all think. We’re conscious that RLR plays music that is certainly more classic rock than a lot of the other bands that are our contemporaries in Leeds and as such we are sometimes overlooked for gigs as we aren’t always considered to be “in vogue.” It’s great that we are getting this opportunity to showcase what we can do and doing it at such a great venue (it’s arguably the best venue in Leeds for music) is a real bonus.
How many does it hold?
Ben: The capacity is 400 and it currently is well on the way to being sold out. If anyone wants tickets we do have some left from our allocation although they are going fast, but get in touch with the band and we will do our best to help them out.
That’s fantastic! Will you be nervous with a crowd that size?
Ben: Nervous is the wrong word. Excited is probably a better description. The fact of the matter is that the audience are there to hear and see great rock n roll and that’s what they are going to get. Ultimately, a crowd of 400 is just a hell of a lot of people we get to party with! What could be better than that?
It sounds like you are really ready for this. Any new tunes you plan to debut?
Ben: Yeah, we have one that we are getting ready especially for the gig actually. We squeezed an early demo of the song into a gig last month but since then we’ve rewritten it and rearranged it. It’s a great rock tune called “Nine Lives” and it will be great to debut it at the gig.
Very exciting! I’ll be waiting to hear that at some point. Are you going to try to live stream the show?
Ben: We want to, but it may be difficult logistically. Worse case scenario I’ll be streaming it from behind the keys.
Lol! They will have to put you up front to see all the action then.
Ben: True, otherwise it will just be a 30-minute video of Phil’s arse. Although I’m reliably informed that there are at least two fans who would not object to that in the slightest …
Haha, every band member deserves a few big fans. I’m sure you have some too!
Ben: Probably, my mum says I’m awesome!
She should know! What kind of sage advice are you looking to get or share with Kyle? Any tips?
Ben: I don’t think I’m in any position to offer advice to anyone, especially the mighty KG. I’ll certainly be happy to take any advice he can give me on anything though. Preferably over a couple of drinks, although I think he’s quit drinking. I’ll drink for two.
I am sure that can be arranged. Offer him some Yorkshire Tea then.
Ben: Is there any other tea?
Nope! Not in my house!
Ben: Haha. When I eventually quit drinking, it will be all I consume.
Any festivals lined up for the summer?
Ben: We are currently waiting to hear back from a couple but have lined up a 10-day tour of LA which we are doing in September so we’re concentrating on that at the moment. Perhaps we could do another interview nearer the time?
Yes, of course! We will have to have you hit the East Coast too, while you are over here.
Ben: You never know …
What else can we look forward to from RLR this year?
Ben: A new album, some great gigs and a tour of LA. I’m not sure what else we can do really, we’re just exhausted from all the giving.
That’s great! I knew I was choosing correctly when I said this would be a big year for you!
Ben: In all seriousness, thank you. We work very hard as a band but without the continuing support of people like yourselves, EGH radio (and countless other radio stations and promoters), obsessive fans (Claire and Jenny — I’m looking at you) we wouldn’t be doing half as much as we are doing. So once again, a huge thank you from me and the rest of the band.
